Schools play an essential role in protecting children from abuse. Staff have close, regular contact with children and young people and are thoroughly trained to enable them to:

• Identify child protection concerns early
• Provide help and support
• Help children understand how to stay safe from abuse
• Refer a child to relevant agencies

Safeguarding responsibilities

Schools have a statutory duty to protect all children in their care. They must have:

• A child protection policy
• Child protection procedures
• A designated lead for child protection
• Safe recruitment processes

The school environment must be a safe place for children so that they feel happy and cared for, enabling them to access the best education and support needed. As a school, we make sure that all adults who work in the school, including volunteers, don't pose a risk to children by completing various employment and suitability checks.

Staff receive regular training to make them aware of any updates to legislation, working practices and procedures, so they know how to identify and respond to any child protection concerns.
